Jeff, how do they differ in function? Is there a way to make the DIY versions more comparable to the real-deal?

I'm not sure if you can make them better and cheaper than the price of a python.They just seem to drain a tank slower. if they can be sealed with no air leaks maybe. But they never seem to seal right. Don't get me wrong it is the way to go if you want to save money. It could be the diameter of the hose. i am not sure but i believe the is a 1/4" difference with the python hose being wider.I guess I should measure before I say anything.

I believe that .25" actually increases the flow by 30%, or more. One inch ID tubing has a flow rate of 600gph.
